Summer is a lovely season, and the weather is ideal for going to the beach or having a cookout with family and friends. This means you'll probably be spending more time outdoors. This is precisely why you should protect your beautiful locks from the sun's UV rays. The sun damages our hair in the same way that it damages our skin. But don't worry, keeping your hair healthy the entire summer is achievable and far less difficult than you might think. Follow these six simple steps to learn how to properly care for your hair this summer.

1.) PROTECTIVE HAIRSTYLE.

Use a protective hairstyle to shield your hair from the sun. Avoid wearing your hair in tight ponytails, which can damage it and, in some cases, cause hair loss if done too frequently.  Instead, go for a looser braid or a ponytail. This will not only make your hair look good, but it will also protect it from the sun's heat and help you avoid future damage.

2.) LESS HEAT.

As previously stated, the heat from the sun already damages your hair, so avoid adding additional heat to it. When you're outside, use hair products with SPF protection to keep your hair safe. Allowing your hair to air dry in the summer and rocking your natural hair are two ways to use less heat. You'll save time styling it and avoid damaging it (both of which are wins in my book.) On days when you'll be outside for the majority of the time, you can protect your hair from the sun by wearing a stylish hat or scarf.

3.) LESS WASHING.

For most people, washing their hair regularly is a must, and the concept of not doing so can feel gross.  The truth is that washing your hair too frequently can strip your scalp's natural oils.  Causing an increase in oil production, making you want to wash it more often. Try to keep the number of times you wash it during the week to a minimum. Instead, wash it once or twice a week.  To avoid drying out your ends, condition your hair after washing it.  On days when you don't wash your hair, use dry shampoo to absorb the dirt, oil, and grease from your scalp to freshen up your hair. (Looking for a natural dry shampoo? 4.) DEEP CONDITION.

Conditioning your hair keeps it free of tangles and mats.  It also helps to strengthen the hair shaft. My hair is typically dry, but bleaching and utilizing heat have made it considerably drier. Conditioning my hair helps it to stay healthy and soft. I try to use a natural deep conditioner whenever possible. I make my own with coconut oil or rice water. ( Learn how to make rice water.)

5.) TRIM.

Split ends occur when the hair becomes excessively dry or damaged from overusing bleach, hair dyes, and heat.  As a result, your hair will require a trim and, in some cases, a major chop! For most people, losing length is difficult (it was for me.) Trim your hair every three months to keep it healthy. This will help prevent split ends and make your hair look thicker. You can always give yourself a trim at home if you want to save money.

6.) HYDRATE.

Water is beneficial to your mind, body, and skin. But did you know it's also healthy for your hair?  Drinking more water will help to strengthen your hair, encourage hair growth, and hydrate your scalp.
